A Girl's Guide To Moving On by Debbie Macomber - my review

A Girl's Guide to Moving On by Debbie Macomber is not your usual Mother-in-law/daughter-in-law story. I enjoyed reading Nichole and Leanne's stories as they move on from their cheating husbands (father and son) to start new lives. I had met Nichole when reading Last One Home, but A Girl's Guide To Moving On, is a great stand-alone book as well.

I enjoyed the story of how Nichole and Leanne deal with their exes, Jake and Sean, and their cheating ways. Also both still trying to control their lives even after divorce.  The new men, Rocco and Nicolai, that come into their lives, showing them how women should be treated.

I am a HUGE Debbie Macomber fan, and this one didn't disappoint me in the least. I highly recommend it to all Macomber fans or anyone wanting to read one of her books for the 1st time.

The New Generation Breast Cancer Book by Elisa Port, M.D. - my review

The New Generation Breast Cancer Book by Elisa Port, M.D. is an informative book for anyone with breast cancer or who has family and friends with it. My Mother was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer several years ago, now is battling Metastatic Breast Cancer, so this book was very interesting to me. The author covers all of these subjects, letting us know what to expect and what can be done.

Each chapter can stand on it's own or can be read cover to cover. Easy to understand for the layperson.
I recommend this book to anyone with a loved one battling this terrible disease or battling it themselves.

The Word Game by Steena Holmes - my review

The Word Game  by Steena Holmes is the first book I have read by this author but won't be the last! A story that takes us into a family dealing with young girls and sexual abuse.

An over-protective mother, Alyson, finally agrees to let her daughter,Lyla, attend a sleep over with her cousin and friends. After which she ask Lyla how she liked it, thus opening a whole new set of questions. Is it her (Alyson) over-protective mind at work or is something seriously wrong? Who should she talk to about it? What should she do? What would you do?

This book tore at my heart!

Rising Darkness by Nancy Mehl - my review

Rising Darkness by Nancy Mehl is the third book in the Finding Sanctuary series, but is also a great stand alone book as I haven't read the others in this series.

Sophie/Emily grew up in a strict Mennonite town, with abusive parents. She felt unworthy of being loved by anyone, especially God. She left home and her Mennonite roots as soon as she was old enough.

Then a chance for a story that could change her career arises. Taking her into another Mennonite town where an armed robber may be hiding with millions of dollars that he got away with. She also meets someone from her past here.

The author kept me on the edge of my seat with this twist and turns of this mystery in Mennonite country. Sophie/Emily receives threatening notes as someone doesn't want her to find out if Terrance Chase is in Sanctuary or not. A book full of love and forgiveness.

Nashville Eats by Jennifer Justus - my review

Nashville Eats: Hot Chicken, Buttermilk Biscuits, and 100 More Southern Recipes from Music City by Jennifer Justus  is a FUN cookbook chockful of great recipes! Plus the author shares wonderful stories of Nashville, the people, music, history, along with the food! All of this in a cookbook with recipes that sound so good it'll make you slap your mama (VERY good).
I can't wait to try the Beaten Biscuits, Redeye Gravy (for hubby), Country Ham Salad,The Nashville Burger, Venison Chili, Grant's Nashville Pan-Fried Catfish, Tomato Pie, and the Strawberry Jam recipes! There are so many YUMMY sounding recipes included in this book it is hard to decide what to try first.

I enjoyed the pictures and trivia she has included as well, it is NOT just a cookbook, but so much more. A must have for all who love cooking, Nashville, or country music. As for me, I'm fixin' to go try out one of these fabulous recipes!

Forgiven by Terri Roberts - my review

Forgiven: The Amish School Shooting, A Mother's Love, And a Story of Remarkable Grace by Terri Roberts is an awesome TRUE story of forgiveness.
I remember where I was at when I heard of the shootings at Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, and how I stopped to pray for all the families involved. I couldn't imagine being the mother of either, one of the girls shot on that day, or the mother of the shooter. My heart and prayers went out to both on that sad day, and still does.

Terri Roberts is the mother of Charles Roberts, who the world knows as the man that walked into an Amish school in 2006 and shot 10 little girls, killing 5, and then himself. She remembers the loving, caring son she raised, how could he have done such a thing? How can SHE forgive her son?

The Amish, show the family and the world what forgiveness is. As God says in his word, we MUST forgive to be forgiven. This is such a heart-warming book written by a broken-hearted mother as she tells how the broken-hearted families helped her. I cried as I read her story, of what forgiveness can do.

I highly recommend this book to everyone, as it an awesome story of the miracle of forgiveness!  Look for it on the shelves October 6, 2015

To Blessed to be Stressed Cookbook by Debora M. Coty is chock-full of great recipes that I can't wait to try out! Divided into four categories - Time Wise, Soul-Fed, Heart Healthy, and Company Happy with each section full of wonderful and EASY sounding recipes.

Time-Wise contains a recipe for Impossible Meat Pie which doesn't sound so impossible at all, can't wait to try this one pan dish.
In Soul-Fed there are several as well that sound so good - such as Pineapple Comfort Food. Who doesn't like comfort food? Or perhaps Apple Fries , and using one of my favorite fruits,Blueberry Delight!
Heart-Healthy contains recipes such as, Zippity-do-da Coleslaw and a Keep You Full Breakfast Bowl.
You will find plenty of recipes to keep your company happy in Company-Happy , with recipes such as Classy Ham Roll-Ups, Pit Stop Pie, and Just Shoot Me Snickers Cake.

I loved reading through this cookbook, and enjoyed the names of some of these recipes. Not sure what I want to try first, so many sounded yummy!  With Bible verses and chuckle breaks throughout leaving you with the feeling you are in a friend's kitchen sharing recipes, jokes and more.

Silver Linings by Debbie Macomber - my review

Silver Linings: A Rose Harbor Novel by Debbie Macomber is an excellent read! Kept me on pins and needles, now I am anxiously waiting for the next book in this series!

So many surprises in this book, from seeing some of the characters of Starry Night put in an appearance, to meeting new characters to love and cheer on. I was excited when I saw and recognized them.  A heartwarming story full of love, forgiveness, and second chances, as we are taken back to Cedar Cove.

This is the 4th book in the Rose Harbor series, but could be read as a stand-alone, as the author does a fabulous job catching us up on what is happening. This series always leaves me wanting to visit this bed and breakfast in Cedar Cove (fictitious place).

Jo Marie is left heartbroken as handyman Mark leaves town.  Coco and Katie come to stay the weekend, as they plan on attending their 10 year high school reunion. Both Coco and Katie have special reasons, wrongs they would like to correct, for attending this reunion.

I am a HUGE Debbie Macomber fan and will be watching for the next book in this series. This is not one you want to miss reading, especially if you are a fan.

The Photograph by Beverly Lewis - my review

The Photograph by Beverly Lewis is an awesome read full of twists and turns.

Three young sisters, whose parents are recently deceased, must make decisions about their futures. Their four older brothers are all married with families of their own.  The youngest, Menno, has inherited the family farm, and lets the three sisters know he plans to move his family into the home. There isn't enough room for everyone so they will have to make plans for their futures.

Frona the oldest sister, is a worrier, always trying to look out for for her younger sisters. A position that an oldest often takes (speaking from experience).

The youngest sister Lily, decides to leave and become fancy. Which shakes everyone in her family as well as the community up, as they try to find her.

And the middle sister, Eva Esch, who dreams of being in love with whoever her future husband might be.  Eva has a candy store that her father built for her, scared it will no longer be in her future as her brother takes over the family farm.

Jed Stutzman, a buggy maker from Ohio, who shows up in Eden Valley, finds a photo of a beautiful young Amish woman stuck in a book, along with personal notes. Eva feels drawn to this handsome young stranger.

An enjoyable read as you visit Eden Valley, meet the Esch sisters and follow along with the troubles of their lives.  I enjoyed this book as much I do all of Beverly Lewis's books. Look for it on September 8, 2015

The Gift by Wanda F. Brunstetter - my review

The Gift by Wanda F. Brunstetter is the second book in the Prairie State Friend series, (The Decision is #1) , but is also a great stand-alone book. I didn't read the first book in the series and had no problem with following along in this one. Although now I want to go back and read The Decision.

I learned a few things about Leah's passions, hummingbirds and reflexology. Was interesting to read and learn about. Leah decides to take Adam up on his proposal of marriage to help him raise his 3 nieces, even though it will be a marriage in name only or will it?

The Gift is an awesome story with love, forgiveness, acceptance, and tolerance for others. The end of the book left me wanting more! Will Adam forgive Cora? Or will Cora and Jared move back to Chicago? Will Adam and Leah have a baby of their own to add to their family? I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series to see how these characters stories play out.

Discerning the Voice of God by Priscilla Shirer - my review

Discerning the Voice of  God: How to Recognize When God is Speaking by Priscilla Shirer is a fantastic book that shows ways that God does still speak to us today if we will only take time to listen.

Ms Shirer does an absolutely amazing job in explaining how we can hear God through his word, how God may use others to confirm what He is trying to tell you.

There are interesting chapter challenges at the end of each chapter for us to try that will bring us closer to God and recognizing when He is speaking to us.

I personally remember a time when I thought a person was crazy that said that they had heard from God, but He does still speak to us His word his very much alive!

I enjoyed this book from start to finish, as it confirmed for me what I was already experiencing. Can't wait to share this book with others who want to learn how to tell when God is speaking.

One of my favorite quotes from the book is...
"He speaks. God speaks. Your Lord and Savior speaks. To you. So wake up expecting. Arrive expecting. Come expecting. Live expecting. Never stop...Expecting."

Last One Home by Debbie Macomber - my review

Last One Home by Debbie Macomber is an awesome stand-alone novel. As everyone knows, I am a huge Debbie Macomber fan, and she didn't disappoint me with this one. Starting with the gazebo on the cover that made me want it in my yard.

Cassie ran away from home at the age of 18 to marry Duke. A man who quickly becomes abusive, cutting Cassie off from her family. Including her two sisters, Karen and Nicole, who were once all three incredibly close.

Cassie eventually ends her difficult marriage and moves to Seattle with her daughter, Amiee. Both sisters Karen and Nicole have their own problems as well. After receiving a letter from Karen, it leads to a possible reunion of the sisters. Things start looking up for Cassie and Amiee.

A story of forgiveness, compassion and new starts.

Hearts Made Whole by Jody Hedlund - my review

Hearts Made Whole by Jody Hedlund is #2 the Beacons of Hope Series, but it is a great stand-alone book as well. Takes us back in time, to 1865,  and the  Windmill Point Lighthouse in Michigan when the rules for women were so much different than today.  I felt many emotions as I read this book, one that I quickly became involved in the story and couldn't put down! I had not read the first book in the series yet, so yes you can read this one without having read the other. Although I will admit NOW I will be going back to read the others.   Out Of The Storm #.5   and  Love Unexpected #1

Caroline Taylor is left to take care of the lighthouse and her siblings after the death of her Father. She does an excellent job at it and loves doing it. Then along come Mr. Finck to remind her that this is not a job for a woman, he has hired a man for the job.  Ryan Chambers, a civil war veteran, who has his own set of problems, doesn't really know how to run the lighthouse. Caroline and Ryan help each other, becoming closer to each other everyday. Then mysterious and creepy things start happening, that they can't explain.

This story is full of drama, suspense, tender moments. It kept me reading into the night as I didn't want to lay it down, yet was disappointed when I got to the end only because I didn't want the story to end. I loved it! The story is also loosely based on a true story which makes it even better. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a good heart-felt read.

How To Enjoy Reading Your Bible by Keith Ferrin - my review

How To Enjoy Reading Your Bible by Keith Ferrin is full of tips to help you understand and enjoy reading the Bible. Instead of just reading a few verses or a chapter or two a day, he suggests reading it as you would with any other book, reading it straight through. Lets know God and have a relationship with him instead of just trying to learn about him!

One of my favorite quotes from this book is....
"After all, isn’t that the point? Isn’t our time in God’s Word primarily about spending time with Him? Being with Him. Knowing Him. Sitting with Him. Learning from Him. Laughing with Him. Hanging out with Him." page 5

He has several tips for different books of the Bible for you to start reading along with family or friends, someone you can discuss it with. I have read through his book, and now I am ready to go back and try out some of his tips. This is an easy to read book, which the author suggests that if you follow his tips you will memorize parts of the Bible without even trying! How cool is that? I am anxious to go back and start with some of his suggested tips for reading the Bible.

I will update this review after I have tried some of these tips out and let you know if I have memorized parts without trying.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to get more from reading their Bible.

Until the Harvest by Sarah Loudin Thomas - my review

Until the Harvest by Sarah Loudin Thomas is an awesome read, set in the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia , in the 70's. The author takes us back to the town of Wise, where everyone knows everything about everyone else, or thinks that they do. Until the Harvest is part of the Appalachian Blessings series, but can also be read as a stand-alone book.

Margaret takes care of her younger sister, Mayfair, taking her with her to work.  Margaret works as a helper for an elderly lady named Emily, who has a grandson named Henry. When Margaret and Henry meet at his grandmother's house, she is not so sure if she likes him, although he and Mayfair strike up an immediate friendship.  Mayfair, a diabetic, with a heart of gold, and a unique gift that makes her a big interest to others. Henry, a young man who loves to play the fiddle, gets himself mixed up with the wrong kind of people when his father passes away.  Margaret and Henry soon find themselves depending on each other though as troubles arise for both. This book has a bit of action, mystery, love, farming, and enough prayers to be called spiritual. One of my favorite parts is when Henry takes Margaret to see his father's tombstone, absolutely LOVED what is inscribed on it! I won't tell you what it says, I will let you read that for yourselves as it is truly a blessing.

The author has done a beautiful job of setting the scene to take the reader back in time to when things were different, and although had it's own share of troubles, was still a bit simpler.  I enjoyed this visit to Wise, West Virginia and all the characters that I met along the way.

After Abel by Michal Lemerger - my review

After Abel and other stories  by Michal Lemerger was a book that I thought I would like based on advance praise I read.  I'm sorry to say that after several attempts to read this I was unable to finish it.

When I read a book based on biblical stories I don't expect to see some of the language that was used in at least one story. As I could not bring myself to read the entire book, I can't say if it is only one story or more.

The story of Lot's Wife doesn't mention God, and was totally different from what the Bible teaches.

I only rate this book one star, because I have to rate it. It is not one that I would recommend to anyone.

Everyday Grace by Jessica Thompson - my review

Everyday Grace: Infusing All Your Relationships with the Love of Jesus by Jessica Thompson is a great read that reminds you that the Holy Spirit is in control!  She starts by telling us that Everyday Grace is anything but another Christian self-help book. This book doesn't tell us what we should and shouldn't do, but instead reminds us of what Christ has done for us. Everyday Grace is a book of hope that keeps us focused on Jesus.

Karma - you do for me and I will do for you. Living with this type of attitude, as most of us do is exhausting.
"The truth is we don’t want ka me, ka thee or karma, even though we think we do. The gospel refutes this idea completely. It is anti-karma and pro-grace. The gospel says that even though you aren’t good enough now and actually never will be good enough in your own good works, I am going to give to you anyway. The gospel tells us that all we have earned has been given to the Son and all the Son has earned has been given undeservingly to us. If we try to rely on karma to see us through, it will be an endless life of working never to obtain. If we rest our souls in the gospel, our lives will be full of receiving, even though we could never work hard enough to receive the gift we have been given." page 4

Each chapter is awesome, the chapter on our children, reminds us of the love of God for ALL of his children. The chapter on friendships reminds us that Jesus is our friend that we can always turn too, a friend that will never let us down. The chapter about our husbands/marriages reminds us of Christ's love for his Church. The chapter on loving difficult people shares how the Holy Spirit is always with us to help and guide us. I enjoyed the entire book but this particular chapter is my favorite, it is a great reminder in letting the Holy Spirit do what he is sent to do.

Everyday Grace has been added to my favorites books to be reread. I think it will be a number one Christianity book for 2015. One I highly recommend to everyone, as we all have relationships of some type.

Passion Pursuit by Linda Dillow and Juli Slattery - my review

Passion Pursuit: What Kind of Love Are You Making? by Linda Dillow and Juli Slattery  is a Bible study. Not your everyday Bible study but one to help you put the passion back in your marriage. There is a DVD to go along with the workbook, I only had the workbook so can only give my thoughts on it. The book is designed to be used as a group study, (but can be used alone) lasting ten weeks. Using Bible scriptures and even giving homework. No matter where you are in your marriage, you will find help in improving the intimacy based on Biblical scriptures. The authors help you to see what is forbidden and what is acceptable by God.  Showing how to use the Songs of Solomon to help you become a Smoking Hot Mama!  Linda and Juli take us through the Bible to show us God's view on passion and intimacy in marriage.  An easy an fun read.

Finding Me by Kathryn Cushman - my review

Finding Me by Kathryn Cushman was a book I was anxious to read from the time I first read the description, I was NOT disappointed! The name of the book is great as Kelli, who was born Darcy , searches for answers to troubling questions. A real page-turner I didn't want to lay it down for any reason.  As it keeps you wanting to find out along with Kelli/Darcy what happened. Why would her Dad fake their deaths and leave her Mom, brother, and sister behind? Why did he lie to her all of her life? A great Christian fiction book with suspense, and a little romance thrown in as well. As I read I wondered how I would react to being in a situation such as any of these characters were. It is a wonderful story with a great lesson about forgiveness.

The Love Letters by Beverly Lewis - my review

I enjoyed reading The Love Letters by Beverly Lewis. Marlena Wenger is staying with her grandmother to help her out after the passing of her grandfather, when her sister is hospitalized and her niece Angel Rose also comes to stay. Marlena quickly becomes connected to the baby, which her beau Nat is not happy about.
The neighbor boy Jacob finds a homeless man, who is having problems with his memory, living in the old mill.

I found myself quickly involved in their stories, disliking Nat and his parents for there judgemental ways, and absolutely loving 'Small Jay'. I love reading books about the Amish and Beverly Lewis has created another wonderful story with characters to love and dislike.

Chet Atkins: The Greatest Songs of Mister Guitar by Mark S. Reinhart - my review

Chet Atkins: The Greatest Songs of Mister Guitar by Mark S. Reinhart is an interesting read by a fan of Chet Atkins. There are many (137) of his greatest hits listed in this book. The author goes into great detail of each song , such as composer, producer, the musicians, location and date of recording, and the original release information. Plus telling more detailed information about each and every song. Mark Reinhart and his parents were really huge fans of Chet Atkins as you can tell by the reading of this book.

The Sons of Isaac by Roberta Kells Dorr - my review

The Sons of Isaac by Roberta Kells Dorr takes you back to another time and place. It is an old story that can be found in the Bible (found in Genesis, starting book 24), one the author has brought to life with her telling of it. Starting with how Isaac and Rebekah met , with her traveling miles to marry a man she had never met. Then on to the birth of twin sons, Jacob and  Esau. Through the lives of these two boys and into Jacob's marriages to Leah and Rachel. Even though the story is an old one it could very well have taken place in today's world. With a family that has love, jealousy, greed, hope, manipulation, stubbornness, and faith in God. Roberta Dorr has done a remarkable job of bringing all of the characters back to life in her telling of their story and the way things might have been.

I highly recommend this book.

Jesus, Jihad, and Peace by Michael Youssef - my review

In Jesus, Jihad, and Peace by Michael Youssef , he explains the difference in beliefs of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Authority in Prayer by Dutch Sheets - my review

Authority in Prayer: Praying With Power and Purpose by Dutch Sheets is an awesome book filled with faith, humor, testimonies and so much more. The author shows Biblical reasons for taking authority in our prayers. A real faith-builder as you read of answered prayers and know that God does answer our prayers. Prayer is powerful! This book helped me to see that it is important to use the power we are given, by God, in our prayers.

I highly recommend this book.
